The true horror of this story is that the people who are supposed to know that this whole thing is anti-music and anti-musician obviously have less than two brain cells to wrap their head around what you point out so clearly in this article. They haven't got a clue. And if they do/did have a clue, well, then I'd call their support for this copyright extension a sophisticated form of organized crime. Of course when you mention the word 'conspiracy' nowadays people immediately call you crazy, but if that's the case then I'm willing to accept that, 'cause it is exactly that: a conspiracy. A conspiracy in favour of the big record producers. If those 'in the know' make obvious and downright wrong, if not criminal, decisions that harm the very musician they claim to protect and instead line the pockets of the already fat cats they're supposed to, well, fight, then it means that they have conspired with the fat cats. And given the fact that the big record companies are too lazy to look for new ways of making an honest buck in this day and age of internet, it makes sense that they lobbied their way into this copyright extension, in accordance with the BPI, since it creates a steady income for them and dismisses the interests of the musician. What a great way of getting things their way: scream blue murder about copyright and that poor sod of an artist that will lose 'considerable' amounts of money if they don't extend...blah...blah...blah... And presto: all politicians vote 'jay'. Remember that in the land of the blind, the one with one eye is king. Guess who the blind are in your article. And last but not least, believe it or not, but I tried to explain what you write to a friend of mine. He is, you guessed it, a musician. And no matter what I told him, he just will not get it. Have a wild guess why people share out of print material with each other online. Et sic gloria mundi transit...

I am glad Mark described the full story. I wasn't aware of some of what Deane got up to since I left the previous band Blase. Everyone knows Mark was the songwriter and driving force behind the band, even Deane knows that. It is just a pity that the name was 'taken' and misused.

This compilation is no better than a bootleg.
Many of of the artists have never received a cent in royalties.
This compilation is an insult - to have their work re-edited without their knowledge stinks.
Same old story - black musicians being ripped off by charlatans.
Anyone who has involved themselves in this project to further their own means should hang their heads in shame from Cassablanca Trax downwards.
Anyone who cares about the originators of House and their enduring legacy get on board because the righteous and legal fightback is about to begin.

For a precedent look at the Decca collapse in 1981. PolyGram (Universal now) bought the remains in a firesale. It worked out rather well as Universal has treated the Decca archives extraordinarily well and all sorts of bits and pieces have been remastered, reissued, and preserved over the years.

It will likely be a firesale, but if it is, either Warners or UMG will more than likely be the purchasing company. Both of those will want the archives as catalogue acquisition is a big part of both of their corporate philosophies

Both companies have massive tape vaults.

Well, if this is genuinely all put out there for a firesale price... maybe those who care should see if they can raise the money & do exactly what you propose? I'd support a project like that.

Unfortunately you are right about the new owners of the master tapes torching them because they see no inherent value in them. I have a friend who's side gig was liquidating DVD replication plants after they go out of business.. these plants sometimes also contained the master reels (Video and Audio) in their vaults.. all of these reels get torched... tens of thousands... irreplaceable and possibly in existence nowhere else in the world. When Universal had its fire on the studio lot a vault of tapes got burned and they were only able to recover a small percentage... the rest are gone. Never digitized, never duplicated.. simply lost. This is indeed a dark future for EMI's vaults of material if this happens.

Great article/s. Metadata has been an issue throughout recorded history - pun intended. Who played what on Sam Cooke-Night Beat? The sessions for Marvin Gaye-I Want You & Here, My Dear featured Ray Parker Jr - or did they? I've always tried to keep documents of various musical endeavours, be they scans/pics of setlists, etc. I need a good DAM :)
